What I am looking for this time of year is deep water in the mouth to at least halfway to the back where it could shallow up. Docks or other cover close by is always a plus but isn’t always a must have.
I always look for creeks that have the main river channel close to the mouth a confluence of both the creek and river channel is a bonus.
Love a Jerkbait: Late fall is upon here like a big wet blanket. Snows are starting to fall. Cool rains are filling those lakes and ponds that almost gave their lives this year.
Kansas has been in a bad drought for a while and most of the lakes in KS have really taken it hard, so every little bit of rain is a graciously appreciated.
As those cold fall rains make it to the lakes, I think about the cooling waters and the fall jerkbait fishing that I find so fun.
Windy-fishing
Well this year’s tournament schedule is done and we’re still waiting for the final tallies to be displayed on the website. My best guess is we ended up in 9th place for the season. Stockton Lakewas the final tournament and last chance for us to move up in the standings and claim some of the dough. Too bad it didn’t happen.
I never fail to check fish reports, lake maps, weather forecasts, and tournaments results. However, this time my dumb ass didn’t notice the multiple marinas dedicated to sailboats. Give me a minute, and I’ll put 2 and 2 together…
Perry Lake: Right Spot, Wrong Time: That’s right. Good riddance to that POS!!! This was a lake I just didn’t want to fish. The little bit of practice we got a few weeks ago didn’t go to well and I didn’t have the normal confidence that I rely on come game day.

Perry Lake Kansas Dam
My fishing buddy and I caught a lot of fish in practice - some largemouth bass, a few hybrid striped bass and whites, and a ton of drum.
This weekend’s tournament takes place about 20 miles north of Topeka, Kansas, on Perry Lake. It’s only my second time on this lake—the first was last weekend when I spent about four hours scouting. Right now, Perry is 4 feet above normal pool due to downstream flooding.
The water has been high for a while, and there are no plans to release it soon. Rumor has it the lake turned over a few weeks ago, which could mean fish are settling into a normal fall pattern.
